The MK1 was adopted in 1913 by the British Navy and by the Royal Marines. Very well made but also extremely complicated for a military weapon, subject to malfunction from even tiny amounts of foreign matter. Many variations were made, some with different sights and some without grip safeties. The pistol may be used as a single shot weapon while keeping a full magazine in the pistol in reserve. The magazine has two locking holes, one for feeding normally and one for reserve while firing single shot. Most of these pistols will function with .45 ACP ammunition, but it is not recommended. The MK2 was made for the Royal Air Force and issued for a period of less than two years. Modifications included a safety which held the hammer at full cock, a graduated rear sight and a change in the rear grip frame to attach a shoulder stock. Both this model and the shoulder stock are collectors’items.
